The Southern Manitoba Academy for Response Training (S.M.A.R.T.) was started in 2005 to provide the highest quality emergency response training available in Manitoba. With a focus on outcome based training, it is our goal to produce emergency responders with an excellent knowledge base as well as the confidence to perform their skills with proficiency.
Dave McMullen is an RN Certified Flight Nurse for the Provincial Air Ambulance (LIFEFLIGHT). He is also a Critical Care Nurse, Certified Emergency Nurse, Primary Care Paramedic Instructor, PHTLS Instructor, EMT instructor, EMR instructor, Heart & Stroke Foundation AED instructor trainer, ACLS instructor, Pediatric Advanced Life Support provider, PEPP instructor, and Advanced Trauma Nursing Course instructor. Dave is a committee member of the Manitoba AED taskforce. He has also been an instructor for the Red River Community College, as well as a Provincial license team member for EMR and EMT exams.
Dave is a co-owner of S.M.A.R.T. and instructs and develops all of our Emergency Medical programs.
Brad Loewen's training as an Advanced Care Paramedic has given him the ability to merge years of EMS experience with development of pre-hospital training programs. Programs have received accreditation and approval from both the Provincial and Federal Governments. Brad is also a Primary Care Paramedic instructor, EMR instructor, Heart & Stroke Foundation Master BLS Instructor Trainer, AED instructor trainer, Pediatric Life Support provider, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support provider and instructor. Brad is a co-owner of S.M.A.R.T. and instructs and develops all of our Emergency Medical programs.
Lise Macaulay is the S.M.A.R.T. Administrative Assistant. At some point in the S.M.A.R.T. experience, every student's name or file will cross Lise's desk. From student information requests to final marks and certification, Lise keeps everything running smoothly. S.M.A.R.T. has been blessed to have experienced tremendous growth over the past couple years due to a committment to excellent training programs and superior student experiences. We are greatly looking forward to continuing both with Lise as a key part of our administrative team.
Lise also teaches our Basic Life Support / AED / and First Aid Training Programs.
Russ Reimer is the Fire Program Manager. Russ brings years of practical experience in Firefighting together with the skills of teaching others how to save lives. Russ manages our fire programs and guides students through each aspect of our intense NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level II program.
Lindsay Reimer is a Paramedic and has been serving the citizens of Manitoba in that capacity for many years. Lindsay has an exceptional attention to detail which translates into excellent patient care and paramedic instruction that is second to none.
Lindsay is involved in the S.M.A.R.T. Emergency Medical Responder program and we are very lucky to have her.
Dr. Kobus du Preez acts as our Advanced Medical Advisor and Instructor. Dr. du Preez brings all of his experience in Emergency Medicine to our Advanced Medical Programs. With a background in trauma care and surgery, Dr. du Preez now holds positions as EMO at the Selkirk and District General Hospital, Medical Director for Lifeflight (Manitoba's Critical Care Air Transport Serivce) and is a distinguished lecturer for the Department of Medical Education for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.
Dr. du Preez instructs programs including Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, International Life Support, Canadian Aerospace Medicine and Aeromedical Transport Association Level 1, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and specialty programs offered by S.M.A.R.T. EMS.
Dr. Werner van Dyk is the Southern Manitoba Academy of Response Training Medical Director and Instructor. Dr. van Dyk also brings many years of experience in Emergency Medicine to our Advanced Medical Programs. With a background in anesthesiology, intensive care, and emergency medicine, Dr. van Dyk currently works as an emergency room physician as well as an aero medical specialist for Lifeflight (Manitoba's Critical Care Air Transport Serivce).
Dr. van Dyk instructs programs at all levels of advanced medical care and provides medical oversight for all S.M.A.R.T. programs.
John Kelly is one of our Life Safety Specialists. John brings his years of experience as a Paramedic and as an Anesthesiologist Assistant at the Health Sciences Centre to every course. John is a very valuable part of our training team. John also conducts most of our AED and Basic Life Support sessions for corporate clients, hospital staff, and private groups. John also assists with our Emergency Medical Responder courses.
Kevin Beaulieu is the Southern Manitoba Academy for Response Training Fleet Manager. Kevin is also an Emergency Medical Responder. Kevin brings years of experience managing fleet vehicles as maintanence supervisor for Bison transport, one of Canada's largest transport companies. We appreciate all of the talent and hard work that Kevin brings to S.M.A.R.T.
